Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that is characterised by difficulties in social and communication behaviours, as well as specific repetitive behaviours and restricted interests. However, we know that individuals with autism may often have a range of other medical conditions, or comorbidities, and that different symptoms can range in severity across the lifespan. The challenge for us as researchers is to find ways to better understand these complicated factors, to diagnose better (and earlier), to develop new ways to deliver interventions, and to try to predict which interventions will have the most benefit for an individual. This talk will summarise our efforts to tackle these big topics and where our research is heading in the future.

Gail is a postdoctoral research fellow working in the Autism Research Team at the Telethon Kids Institute, led by Professor Andrew Whitehouse. After completing a PhD at the University of Sydney, Gail moved to Perth to help coordinate the Australian Autism Biobank, Australia’s largest biological repository of information about children with autism and their families. She is passionate about finding new and innovative ways to understand autism and to deliver effective interventions
